Navigating Cross-Organizational Challenges: Insights from Senior Leadership in Software
Modern business tells many tales of organizations that had the potential to succeed but struggled due to the misalignment of internal processes and strategies. Cascade Clarity conducted a survey to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by CEOs and senior leadership, reaching out to over 300 industry leaders in mid-market organizations.
The questions asked were designed to gain critical insights into cross-organizational challenges:
- Where does cross-organizational friction exist?
- Do you have the correct data visibility to guide strategic decisions?
- Provide any additional comments about cross-organizational challenges.
The feedback shed light on crucial data relating to the organizational dynamics within the software sector. However, for senior leadership to develop actionable strategies that effectively address challenges, they must first identify where these challenges exist and understand the mechanisms driving them. Only then can steps be taken to mitigate these impacts.
Where Does Cross-Organizational Friction Exist?

Sales and Marketing Alignment (47.83%)
Most respondents identified sales and marketing misalignment as the lead cause of inefficiencies. These inefficiencies manifest in various ways, including:
- Obscured GTM flywheel/funnel metrics.
- MQL to SQL Conversion challenges, including hand-off and reporting.
- Conversion rate metrics with reason codes, including “Lost Opportunity” reporting.
- “Qualified” Leads – Effective criteria reporting and monitoring.
- Employee Alignment:- Complexity of design and tracking of Compensation Plans. – Lower employee engagement scores.- Higher attrition in sales professionals.
Strategic Planning and Execution (39.13%)
The second most relevant issue identified was the misalignment between strategic planning and execution. Over 39% of respondents emphasized the importance of ensuring strategic plans translate into practical, actionable steps.
Sales and Operations Fulfillment (13.04%)
While comparatively less common, communication issues between the sales and operations departments were noted by 13% of participants. This friction can manifest due to misalignment between the sales team’s communication of product functionality during the closing process, customer product expectations, and the implementation teams working with actual product functionality.
Organizational Harmony: The Mechanism Behind Alignment

The causes of the inefficiencies noted in the survey data often link directly to a lack of organizational harmony. Many studies on culture have identified the impacts of alignment and decision-making on the overall success of corporations. In Cascade Clarity’s experience, technology, alignment, processes, and, most importantly, people are the four critical pillars of culture — the backbone of organizational harmony.
For instance, companies with a strong emphasis on customer orientation and team collaboration align sales and marketing efforts more effectively. How these teams are rewarded and evaluated will also impact alignment. Further, alignment can suffer if sales and marketing teams adopt different metrics, different compensation schemes, or conflicting goals, affecting the interconnectivity of all elements.
Another aspect to consider is ensuring strategic plans translate into practical, actionable steps. This approach is essential to achieving financial and people-related corporate objectives, specifically meeting growth targets, improving employee engagement scores, cultivating rewarding workplaces, and fulfilling EBITDA expectations. A 2016 study by Gomes and Robello found that 46% of EBITDA can be explained by corporate culture, underscoring the significance of work culture as a whole.
Work culture describes the invisible forces of shared values, beliefs, norms, and behaviors that shape the work environment. It further guides how employees interact and make decisions from the organization’s people, process, technology, and alignment strategies. In short, culture can either enable or hinder the successful implementation of business strategy. A culture that aligns with the strategic goals promotes employee commitment to the process, enhancing its chances of success. Conversely, a misaligned culture can create resistance and impede strategy execution.
Overall, company culture and the commitment to the alignment of employees can determine the quality of customer service. Employees who feel aligned with the company and each other are more likely to go the extra mile to meet customer needs and expectations. Equally as important as the alignment between sales and marketing, the alignment between sales and operations is crucial to organizational harmony — misalignment results in employee and customer dissatisfaction, poor workforce planning, and capacity constraints.
From Friction to Fulfillment
The survey insights from senior leadership in the mid-market software space provide a valuable snapshot of many current cross-organizational challenges in the dynamic digital age.
However, as companies in general, not only software organizations, continue to grow, addressing these frictions will be essential to maintaining growth, innovation, resilience, elevated employee experience, employee engagement, vibrant culture, customer satisfaction, and, perhaps most notably, organizational harmony.
When ascertaining if an organization is experiencing friction within these spaces, it is best to ask some fundamental guiding questions, such as:
- How well do you believe your organization’s various departments and teams align with your company’s strategic objectives?
- What mechanisms or processes are in place to ensure alignment across your organization?
- What strategies are in place to maintain high levels of employee engagement, especially during times of expected growth?
- How does your organization identify and address bottlenecks or inefficiencies in workflows and procedures?
- Are there key performance indicators (KPIs) or metrics used to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of critical processes along with individual performance?
- What is your organization’s current technology infrastructure, and how does it support your business’s strategic goals?
- What role does technology play in enhancing your stakeholders’ experiences and engagement?
In our next article, Cascade Clarity will provide insights into how CEOs and senior leadership can address challenges, moving from friction to fulfillment from a practical, strategic position embarking on the journey toward organizational harmony.
